This image depicts Ganymede, a beautiful youth from Phrygia who was carried off Mount Ida, where he was tending his father's flocks, by the Gods that he might fill the cup of Jupiter (Zeus) and live among the immortals. Some legends say that Jupiter disguised himself as an eagle, or he asked an eagle to carry Ganymede away. His parents were given a pair of 'divine horses' as compensation for the loss of their son. Astronomers have placed Ganymede in the stars as Aquarius.
