The subject of this painting was owner of the Spode company but had many other outside interests and official roles. Copeland is shown in a formal pose in a style suitable to a former Lord Mayor of London. The reference to President in the title refers to his position as President of the Bethlem Hospital. Each President was featured in a portrait commissioned by the hospital. By the late 20th century there was a surfeit of these large portraits owned by the hospital and they were offered for sale to interested parties. This one was sold to the Spode company and subsequently became part of the collection of the Spode Museum Trust.
