De Breanski was a distinguished landscape painter from a family which included five other artists. His landscapes are often bathed in light and usually feature water. With his son, Alfred de Breanski Junior, continued the traditions of Victorian landscape art well into the twentieth century.

The River Wey gives its name to Weybridge in Surrey and is a tributary of the River Thames, a popular subject for this artist. The Wey Valley is an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the canal section known as the Wey Navigation now belongs to the National Trust.
