On the left of the picture, in a landscape setting, is a large middle aged man sitting on a grassy bank. He is dressed in a red waistcoat, beige breeches, and brown knee high galoshes, and holds his hat in his right hand. Across his chest is slung a strap, which could possibly be that of a pouch or rifle. He holds a handkerchief in his left hand. Two white and brown cocker spaniels sit on the ground in the bottom right corner. In the centre is an old tree, with a wooden stile next to it.
