This is a copy after the popular composition by Sassoferrato, whose numerous paintings of the Virgin inspired many copies. Original versions of the composition include an example at the National Gallery, London, dating from the 1640s, where the Virgin is depicted half-length. This copy is close to the version by Sassoferrato at the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo, which is cropped more closely around the Virgin's face to intensify the sense of the Virgin's prayerful devotion. The vogue for such devotional images of the Virgin, made for display in private homes, was stimulated by the Marian cult of the Counter-Reformation.
