This charming portrait may be of a Worcestershire family, as we know Edward Villiers Rippingille was working there in 1829 and 1830 painting many portraits of children. The elongated guitar held by the boy was a type that was very popular in Europe at the time; it was the style that Schubert would have known and played. Rippingille was a guitarist himself but shows the boy holding the instrument incorrectly for the sake of the balanced composition of his painting.
