Thomas (1795–1873), 2nd Earl of Zetland, was Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1844 to 1870. In this portrait he is wearing his peer’s robes. Desanges was a French artist who lived in London from 1845. He is generally remembered today for his portraits of Victoria Cross winners and other military paintings. In 1885 he was commissioned by the United Grand Lodge of England to paint a number of replacements for portraits that were destroyed in a fire at Freemasons’ Hall, London, in 1883. This portrait is probably such a replacement.
