Considered the pre-eminent lawyer of his generation, Bingham has served as Britain's Senior Law Lord from 2000 to 2008, Master of the Rolls from 1992 to 1996 and Lord Chief Justice from 1996 to 2000. Bingham favoured incorporating the European Convention on Human Rights into domestic law, known as the Human Rights Act of 1998, and advocated the separation of the judicial branch of the House of Lords from Parliament to create the Supreme Court in 2009.
