Thomas Knyvet or Knyvett (1545–1622) was a member of a prominent Wiltshire landowning family as the second son of Sir Henry Knvyet of Charlton. Having attended Jesus College, Cambridge, in 1564–1565, soon afterward his family links gained him the position of Gentleman of the Bedchamber to Elizabeth I – in which guise he appears in this fine portrait, fashionably dressed in order to emphasize his wealth and status. He wears a white, slashed doublet and double ruffs edged with gold, and carries an elaborate sword with a green-and-gold sash and a matching dagger at his back. Knyvet became MP for Thetford in Norfolk in 1601 and was knighted in 1604. He shot to national prominence in 1605, however, when he was ordered by King James I to search the cellars below the Houses of Parliament on the evening of 5th November.
