Thomas Tickell, poet, was educated at Queen's, Fellow, Professor of Poetry, 1711. He was Addison's friend and literary executor. The artist, Kneller, born in Lubeck, was in England by 1676 where, after Lely's death he was appointed Principal Painter to the Crown. He produced the famous portraits of 40 leading men of letters for the Kit-Cat Club. With pressure of work, canvases were left to assistants to finish resulting in many sub-standard 'Knellers'.
