Gascoyne-Cecil was a Conservative politician who was elected Prime Minister on three separate occasions: from 1885 to 1886, 1886 to 1892 and 1895 to 1902. Salisbury entered the House of Commons in 1853 as MP for Stamford, Lincolnshire until he was raised to the peerage in 1868. He also served as Secretary of State for India under Disraeli from 1874 to 1878 and as Foreign Secretary from 1878 to 1880, 1887 to 1892 and 1895 to 1900. He was a staunch imperialist and an opponent of reforms under Liberal governments.
