The Typographical Association Preston Branch banner, 1849–1882. 2012 marked the celebration of the Preston Guild Year, which has taken place every 20 years since the sixteenth century. It originally began as an annual event in 1179 when Henry II gave Preston its Royal Charter. The event is celebrated with processions by various groups through the city, including city merchants, the church and community groups. This banner is known to have been carried in the Preston Guild in 1882. The Typographical Association formed in 1849 to represent those involved in the printing trades. On one side of the banner are two seated women who represent 'Knowledge' and the 'Messenger'. The other side shows William Caxton, who is believed to have first introduced the printing press to England, examining a printed page with his apprentice.
