The identity of the sitter in this portrait is not certain but she is traditionally thought to be Margaret Pole, a staunch supporter of Catherine of Aragon and her daughter Princess Mary. She was beheaded after her son, Cardinal Pope, denounced the decision of King Henry VIII to become head of the Church of England.
