A stormy marine scene. Most of the picture is taken up by rain and black clouds, especially at the top left side. On the left of the picture are the harbour wall and lighthouse, with a rough sea lashing the wall. A figure looks over the wall at a ship in the centre of the picture. There is a small two-sailed boat with two figures, its prow lifted up by the waves and leaning to the right. On the right of the picture, on the horizon, is a large full-rigged sailing ship; in the foreground is a solid copper weight, like an anchorage point, to which the ships could moor.
