The sitter was a distinguished barrister and keen supporter of Wilberforce's anti-slavery movement. His wife, Sibella Ann, was the daughter of James Stephen, MP, who married Wilberforce's sister. The children, Samuel, aged 13 and his sister Sibella Marianne, aged five, did not sit still for this portrait, as the sketch that survives shows. The group portrait was painted in 1830 when the artist was living in Bayswater, London, but had a studio in Hampstead, not far from Garratt's house at North End.
