William Gwavas was a barrister of the Middle Temple from 1670 to 1741. He is shown here in the costume of his time. He was one of the younger members of a West Penwith group of chroniclers of the decline of the Cornish language. He wrote in Cornish and compiled word lists and gathered 'the fragments that are left, that nothing be lost'. The Gwavas family came from Sithney, near Helston.
