This full-length portrait was purchased by the corporation in 1691 together with a portrait of Mary II, although a letter in the city archives from the supplier pleas for settlement of the bill, suggesting that the corporation was slow in paying. Certain elements of the portrait suggest that it was, in part, based on a Kneller painting of the King. The companion portrait of Mary II, which is of superior quality and may even have been a product of the Kneller studio, is presently in long-term storage at The Herbery Art Gallery and Museum owing to its condition.
