Father of the more famous William Pitt the Younger, Pitt was a key political figure in Georgian Britain. As a life-long sufferer from gout, Pitt often visited Bath for the spa cure.

He was given a succession of key roles in British politics, but his habit of plain speaking got Pitt into trouble. He left Bath in 1762, following a very public argument with Ralph Allen over foreign policy.
