Originally from Perth, William Trotter became Lord Provost in 1825 after a contest with William Allan. During his short tenure, there were disputes about building work on the south side of Princes Street, the management of Leith Harbour was transferred to the Leith Docks Commission – a controversial change – and the foundation stone of the George IV Bridge was laid.
