This is a head and shoulders portrait of William Wooller, a wool merchant and benefactor of the Company of Merchant Adventurers who was admitted in 1587. In his will, William Wooller left a legacy to the inhabitants of Bingley town, which for 20 years after his death ensured the welfare of both the town's poor and that of the school. He faces forwards, wearing an expensive black robe, fashionable white ruff, and holding a sealed envelope in his left hand showing to the viewer that he is literate. The inscription beneath the figure reads: 'William Wooller of the Cytie of York Merchant Adventurere. By his last will 1597 did give £100 pounds to be lent to twoo yong men Merchants adventurers for three yeares and thean to others acordingly for ever'.
