Barns-Graham visited Switzerland in 1940 and this trip had a profound effect on her work. She later wrote about ‘The massive strength and size of the glaciers, the fantastic shapes, the contrast of solidity and transparency, the many reflected colours in the strong light’. On her return to England, the memories of the Grindelwald Glacier led to an outpouring of drawing and painting over the next decade known as her ‘Glacier Abstractions’. 'Winter Landscape 1952' demonstrates Barns-Graham's ability to translate her experience of the glacier into her paintings.
