The statue of Wojtek, the soldier bear adopted by the Polish army, was given to Duns by the people of Zagan, Duns' twin town in Poland, in April 2016. Wojtek helped the soldiers carry ammunition. As well as carrying heavy mortar rounds at the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy, he learned to drink beer. At the end of the war, he was billeted at an army camp in Hutton, 10 miles from Duns, before ending his days at Edinburgh Zoo.
