A design for a plate to J. C. Lavater’s, ‘Essays on Physiognomy’, translated by Henry Hunter, London, 1789–1798, vol.III.ii., facing p.349. Lavater writes in the text accompanying the engraving that the eye expresses ‘ecstasy, more or less convulsive’, and belongs to a ‘penetrating spirit, a character affectionate and impassioned’.
