The model for the painting was Lilian Anne Doherty known affectionately as 'Annie'. She was born in Devizes, Wiltshire in 1900 and died in Edinburgh on Christmas Eve, 1935. Her parents, who both worked in service, moved to Edinburgh where her 10 brothers and sisters were born. The family initially lived at Young Street and then moved to Gayfield Square. The Doherty family used to model regularly, often for a small fee, for the artist Henry John Dobson (1858–1928). Annie herself used to model for Dobson and the family believe that she was 'loaned' to David Foggie for his painting which depicts Annie aged 23. The family also believe that this was the only occasion that she modelled for Foggie. The painting was probably painted in the artist's studio in Raeburn Place in Stockbridge.
