A scene of a group of stretcher bearers carrying a wounded soldier through a landscape of burnt tree stumps and puddles. Four men carry the stretcher at shoulder height, one at each corner, two men carrying rifles visible in the valley behind them. The predominately black, white and grey colour scheme suits the cartoonish stylisation of this painting, but there are some light tones of colour in the yellow sky and green ground.
