Frances Spalding is an art historian, biographer and critic, and has published extensively on modern British art. As a biographer, she has written about the lives of Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell, Gwen Raverat, John Minton and of the poet Stevie Smith, as well as a centenary history of the Tate. Among her more recent books are John Piper, Myfanwy Piper: Lives in Art (2009), Prunella Clough: regions unmapped (2011) and Virginia Woolf: Art, Life and Vision (2014). She has also experienced the pleasure of helping curate exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and for Pallant House Gallery, Chichester. Her book The Bloomsbury Group, published by the National Portrait Gallery, is a useful introduction to a complex subject.
