Lauren R. Bruce is a PhD student focusing on the perception and unethical treatment of Egyptian human mummified remains in nineteenth-century Britain. She researches the concept of ‘travel and the body,’ and concentrates on travel writing, visual culture, Victorian ‘uses’ for mummies, and museum collections and displays to evaluate different attitudes towards mummies. She is also the creator and editor of The Anatomy Shelf, a free monthly newsletter about the body in literature, history, and art.
She is also the co-founder and co-chair of ISSE, The International Society for the Study of Egyptomania. ISSE focuses on the promotion of research into, and discussion of, the phenomenon of ‘Egyptomania’ – ensuring that we engage with critical analysis of the ethical aspects tied into this area of study. She has spoken at a variety of events and institutions including Trinity College Dublin, the Miskatonic Institute, the International Gothic Association, and the Centre for Travel Writing Studies. She has a regular column in the H. Rider Haggard journal regarding Haggard and Egyptomania.
She also runs two popular blogs and social media pages, The Gothic Bookworm and Mummymania Mondays. Lauren is on Twitter @gothicbookworm and @mummymaniafacts
