Sarah MacDougall is Director of Ben Uri Gallery and Museum and the Ben Uri Research Unit for the Study of the Jewish and Immigrant Contribution to British Visual Art since 1900. She is the author of a biography (2002) and a catalogue raisonné (in progress) on Mark Gertler and guest-curated the Gertler room at Tate Britain (2018). She has co-curated a series of exhibitions on the Whitechapel Boys (with Rachel Dickson), also co-authoring a David Bomberg monograph (2018).
She also specialises in artists from the so-called ‘Hitler émigré’ generation including Josef Herman and Jankel Adler, refugee sculptors, and émigré art teachers, and has created a website dedicated to the work of Eva Frankfurther. Related exhibitions include 'Forced Journeys: Artists in Exile in Britain, c.1933–1945' (2009–2010); 'Refugees: the lives of Others' (2017) and 'Finchleystrasse: German artists in exile in Great Britain and Beyond' (2018). She is a committee member of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies at the University of London and a co-editor of and contributor to the Vol. 19 Yearbook Applied Arts in British Exile from 1933 (2019).
She has an MA in Literature and the Visual Arts from the University of Reading.
