Orkney Arts Museums and Heritage is run by Orkney Islands Council’s Department of Education and Leisure Services. The service is responsible for four museums and various other heritage sites. The Orkney Museum at Tankerness House in Kirkwall is Orkney’s principal museum and tells the story of Orkney’s inhabitants over the last 5000 years, from first settlement until the present day. Scapa Flow Visitor Centre and Museum, Lyness, tells of Orkney’s role in both world wars and Corrigall Farm Museum and Kirbuster Museum tell the story of agriculture and domestic life. The Archaeology collection is a ‘Recognised’ collection of national significance. The social history collection has four collecting areas; commerce and industry; domestic and community life; works of art and wartime Orkney. Most of the contemporary collection is on display through a scheme called ‘Art in Public Places’ which enables the council to display paintings and works of art through various council-owned public buildings in Orkney. These include primary and secondary schools, residential homes and day care centres.
