Belmont House was built in 1775 by Thomas Mouat of Garth, a Shetland landowner and businessman. It is a classical Georgian house which remained unaltered throughout its history and is designated a category A listed building by Historic Scotland.
In 1996 the Belmont Trust was formed with the aim of saving and restoring Belmont House, a project which lasted 15 years, cost £1.2 million and has won national accolades. Nearly all the work was carried out by local craftsmen.
With the completion of the restoration project in 2011 the aims of the Trust changed to maintaining and safeguarding the building for the future and together with the Bluemull Development Company, a local community organisation, the house is now let for holidays, weddings and other events. All profits from Belmont are used to maintain the house and enhance it for the future.
