The Carisbrooke Castle Museum is run by an independent charitable trust, sited within a medieval castle in the care of English Heritage. It was founded by HRH Princess Beatrice, Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter in 1898, as a memorial to her husband Prince Henry of Battenberg. It is unique in being the only museum in Britain founded by a member of the royal family directly for the public's benefit.
The Museum cares for some 27,000 items connected with the Isle of Wight, including social history, medieval history, Charles I, ecclesiastical history, costume, military history, photographs, documents, ephemera, decorative art, prints and fine art. The art collections are particularly rich in watercolour paintings, with more modest collections of drawings and oil paintings, the majority belonging to the 18th and 19th centuries.
