The University of Salford has been collecting artworks since the late 1960s and exists for the benefit of students, staff and the public. The Collection contains over 700 modern and contemporary works, which are displayed across campus, at our New Adelphi Exhibition Gallery, with our partner venues, and made available for UK and international loans.
Early collecting policies were quite broad – but mainly included post-war British painting, print-making, and later, photography. In particular, works with a connection to Salford or Greater Manchester were acquired – including examples by Northern School painters (Adolphe Valette, L. S. Lowry, Harold Riley) and the Manchester Print Workshop (Kip Gresham, Adrian Henri).
Later, a number of works by the Young British Artists were added (Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Sam Taylor-Johnson) alongside a special collection of expressionist works by painter Albert Adams.
Since 2013, the collecting policy has focussed on three interlinked strands: About the Digital (Mishka Henner, Rachel Maclean, Thomson & Craighead, Liam Young) Chinese Contemporary Art (Cao Fei, Ma Qiusha, Yang Yongliang, Luke Ching) and From the North (Rachel Goodyear, Maurice Carlin, Nick Crowe & Ian Rawlinson).
