In 1895 Captain Walker towed a steamship called 'Cataluna' which had lost her rudder. On board the steamship were passengers and Spanish troops bound for Cuba. This painting was given to Captain Walker by the Spanish Government in gratitude for his part in saving the lives of the passengers and crew. George Walker was born in Ulverston and made his first voyage in a canal boat at the age of 14. He then entered the Merchant Service. He captained boats for James Fisher (Barrow), Clarke and Co. (Glasgow), the Atlas Co. (New York) and the Little Steam Navigation Company. His family lived in Clyde Villa, Fairfield Lane. One of his daughters, Edith Ann, became a Councillor and Justice of the Peace. This painting was donated to the Town Hall by the descendants of Mrs Ward.
