(b Haarlem, 6 June 1638; d Haarlem, 10 June 1698). Dutch painter of town views and architectural scenes, active in Haarlem, Amsterdam, and The Hague. His representations of these cities have documentary accuracy, but they are never dry, achieving a poetic harmony by a subtle use of light and shade (three of his pictures of Haarlem, including a church interior, are in the National Gallery, London). The work of Gerrit's elder brother, Job (b Haarlem, 27 Jan. 1630; d Haarlem, 23 Nov. 1693), is often very similar, although he also painted other subjects, including genre and biblical scenes.
