There is confusion around the various artists working in the Channel Islands during the first quarter of the 19th century with the name Young. It is agreed however that the majority of paintings signed 'Young' are by John Young (1786–1828). He was a painter of landscapes, which were described in great detail using dark brown and green hues. A tree is often used in the composition towards the edge of the painting, sometimes with the branches making a distinctive 'Y' shape, for Young.
