This portrait depicts Alexander McKee (1918–1992), OBE who led the search for and rediscovery of the 'Mary Rose' in the Solent in the 1960s and 1970s. It was painted by Alice McKee, the sitter's daughter-in-law, and installed in the old Mary Rose Museum in March 1998.

The portrait depicts Alexander McKee at the time the ship was recovered from the sea bed in 1982. During his lifetime, Alexander McKee was a Second World War veteran, broadcaster, playwright, historian and author – the portrait shows many of his published books in the background. Behind the sitter is also a picture of some of the original team of divers from the 'Mary Rose Special Branch 0551 of the Southsea Branch of the British Sub Aqua Club 0551', whom he led in the rediscovery of the ship.
