Alexander Stuart Frere (1892–1984) served as President of the Board of General Purposes of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1959 to 1972. During the Second World War he worked for the Ministry of Labour and National Service, and in 1946 he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire). The next initials that follow his name in the title (PSGW) denote his additional role as Past Senior Grand Warden at the United Grand Lodge of England. This portrait was commissioned by them in 1970 to mark his time as President and is one of a series of portraits of past presidents of the Board of General Purposes.
