This painting is signed on the quay at the lower right, and was probably painted in Antwerp in the late 1670s. William Blathwayt I (1649?–1717) purchased it and its pendant (pair), Minderhout’s 'A Harbour Scene with Oriental Figures', through the Flemish painter Jan Siberechts (1627–1703) in 1693. The paintings are listed in a document recording purchases from Siberechts as '2 peices of Minderhout'.
