This is a sitting portrait believed to be of Grace Wood, second wife of John Wood, Pawnbroker of Lady Peckett’s Yard. She wears a green dress with a lace collar, a lace hood, a brooch and a heavy gold chain. A tartan shawl is draped over her left forearm. Grace Wood is the mother to three of the four children in the family portrait known as ‘The Trial of the Pony’, also painted by Thomas Grimshaw.
