This is a sitting portrait believed to be of John Wood, Pawnbroker of Lady Peckett’s Yard. He sits sideways on the chair, with one arm over its back and his hands clasped together on his lap. He wears a black suit and waistcoat, with a white shirt beneath which has a high-wing collar. A black bow-tie is worn over the high-wing collar. John Wood is the father of the four children in the family portrait known as ‘The Trial of the Pony’, also painted by Thomas Grimshaw.
