A view of Castle Cornet, before the 1672 explosion. Isaac Sailmaker, known as the father of British sea painting, was a Dutch marine painter active in Britain. He came to London to work for art dealer George Geldorp and later worked for Oliver Cromwell. Sailmaker did not sign his work so identification of his work comes down to recognising some distinctive characteristics such as slight vertical ruffles across his stiff-in-the-wind flags. The use of a restrained palette primarily of greys, greens and black. He also used gold ‘blobs’ to show gilded details of the British vessels, whereas his contemporaries used flat brush strokes.
