This is a portrait of Charles, the 9th Lord Elphinstone (1682–1757), a title in the peerage of Scotland. He was married twice and was the father of 11 children, outliving 7 of them. He was a captain in the Army, serving in Flanders from 1706 and was severely wounded at the Battle of Agremont in 1708. The title was created in 1510 for Alexander Elphinstone who was killed at the Battle of Flodden three years later. He was succeeded by his son, the second Lord, killed at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547. His grandson, the fourth Lord, served as Lord High Treasurer of Scotland. Painted in a feigned oval, he depicted wearing a cravat, a fashionable long, curly wig, and a suit of armour only on his right side. The left side of the subject is clothed in a deep red jacket.
