Richard Waitt is well known for his still life paintings and may have studied under the painter, John Scougal. He worked closely with the Clan Grant and frequently painted individuals in Highland dress.

The unknown Highlander depicted in this portrait bears a resemblance to another of Waitt’s portraits, Alastair Grant Mor, The Castle Grant Champion. Artists would frequently use the same faces or stance in their portraits.
