This portrait depicts Charlie Lee in front of the 'Barley Mow' Pub in Warrington. Charlie Lee was a well known trader in Warrington town centre. His father ran an oyster store on Buttermarket Street in the 'Old Fox' Inn. When the 'Old Fox' was demolished he opened a stall in the market and his son continued to run the stall, chalking a new poem every day on the board above the shellfish display. Charlie is depicted wearing a black trilby hat and dark jacket with a red and white spotted handkerchief in his breast pocket. He is playing draughts with a cat sat on his right.
