Born in Harrogate, England in 1962 and raised in Adelaide, South Australia, Shaw came to Belfast in 1997 to study for a master of fine art at the University of Ulster. He first came to prominence for his series of paintings based on the colourful silks worn by jockeys and then maritime signal flags. He has exhibited widely all over the world and his work is held in many private and public collections.

The Naughton Gallery held a solo exhibition of Shaw's work in 2010. 'Crown' is inspired by the distinctive tiles from the floor of the Crown Bar in Great Victoria Street, one of Belfast’s most famous pubs.
