The portrait was conceived during the 2003 Labour party conference. At this time David Blunkett was Home Secretary under the Labour government. This portrait was exhibited at the BP Portrait award at the National Portrait Gallery in 2003; Lorna Wadsworth has gained an impressive portfolio since graduating from Falmouth College of Arts in 2002. Artist-in-residence at the Labour party Conference in 2003 and having painted figures as diverse as the Archbishop of Canterbury and Sir Derek Jacobi, Wadsworth's style is unique; I strive to capture a likeness using large expressive brush work to convey the character and vitality of my sitter. My paintings explore colour, texture and the representation of light and shade on the human figure. I like my portraits to function on two levels – from distance the likeness of a person is apparent, close up there is the juxtaposition of colours and an economy of style.
