In his early career Yeats mainly worked as an illustrator but shortly after the turn of the century he began to work regularly in oil. The freedom of brushwork which he developed in his oils is perfectly evident in this small painting. He evokes the atmosphere of Dublin, using expressive impasto and rapidly applied paint to create a romantic, highly personal image which reflects his childhood memories of light and landscape.
