Evelyn Procter was born in Hunton Bridge, Hertfordshire, the youngest daughter of Harold Procter, Master Miller. She matriculated at Somerville College in 1915 and was placed First Class in History in 1918. She was elected Fellow at Somerville in 1921 and was first appointed to St Hugh's as History Tutor in 1925, becoming a Fellow in 1926 and then Principal in 1946. Her first challenge was to bring the College back together after the disruptions of the Second World War, and also, as Custos Hortulorum, to restore the gardens after the eventual demolition of hospital huts in 1952. During her term of office, the College purchased the last of the Victorian houses on its perimeter and the entire 'island site' was established. A respected scholar of medieval Spain, she returned to her research after retirement in 1962, regularly attending academic meetings and completing her book 'Curia and Cortez in Leon and Castile'.
