The distinguished soldier and military strategist Alan Francis Brooke, 1st Viscount Alanbrooke of Brookeborough, was born in France and educated abroad and at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. He joined the Royal Field Artillery in 1902 and served in Ireland and India before going to the western front in 1914. During the First World War, he rose to general staff officer. He commanded the 2nd corps of the British Expeditionary Force (1939–1940), covering the evacuation from Dunkirk and was Commander-in-Chief of the Home Forces (1939–1940). As chief of the Imperial General Staff (1941–1946), he organised Britain’s contribution to the war effort and acted as principal strategic advisor to Winston Churchill. He was appointed Field-Marshall in 1944, received a baronetcy in 1945 and was given a viscountcy in 1946. In the same year he was created KG and admitted to the Order of Merit. Among his appointments in civilian life were a directorship of the Midland bank (1949–1963) and chancellorship of Queen’s University (1949–1963).
