In this painting of flowers it is possible to detect the mutual influence Hitchens shared with Winifred Nicholson. Hitchens stayed with the Nicholsons at their cottage at Banks Head in Cumberland in 1925, shortly after he had invited Ben Nicholson to become a member of the Seven and Five Society. There they began to 'relearn' how to paint and, in their company, Hitchens began to use a more assured brushstroke and bolder palette.
